5-Day, 4-Night Hiking & Wine-Tasting Tour Veteran hikers will find ecstatic pleasure in this budget-oriented Central Coast tour, which offers challenging hiking and incredible views of the San Luis Obispo wine country and the deep blue Pacific Ocean.
South San Luis Obispo County has earned worldwide recognition for the exceptional quality of wine grapes it produces, and the Edna Valley and York Mountain appellations that you’ll visit here are paradise for wine tasters. The climate and marine soils of Edna Valley have earned the valley’s grape growers a reputation for growing superior Chardonnays, but are also ideally suited for growing Pinot Noir, Syrah, Grenache, and white Rhone varieties such as Roussanne and Viognier.
The cooler York Mountain AVA, a small California appellation located just west of Paso Robles, sits east of the San Lucia Range and receives ocean breezes that generally don’t reach the Paso Robles area. York Mountain therefore produces excellent Pinot Noir grapes.
On this tour, you’ll enjoy two blind wine tastings, visits to local wineries in the Paso Robles area, all meals, local lodging, transportation & fees, and room tax.
Sunday Meet your California Wine Hikes tour guide mid-afternoon at your hotel, where you’ll enjoy a buffet reception and your first tasting, a blind comparison tasting of six locally-produced Chardonnays.
Monday You’ll enjoy breakfast in town, then grab lunch and water and travel to a 7-mile hike to two summits above Estero Bay. You’ll hike through grasslands, wildflowers, and chaparral and view many miles of Pacific coastline while you enjoy your lunch. After the hike, you’ll travel to some of the best wineries of the Edna Valley, later returning to the hotel for a brief rest followed by dinner and fine local wines at a popular local restaurant.
Tuesday After breakfast, you’ll board the van and head to the east side of the Edna Valley for a moderate hike in the Santa Lucia Wilderness, where you’ll enjoy wildflowers and waterfalls. After the hike, you’ll visit more Edna Valley wineries, then return to the hotel to tidy up. Later, you’ll enjoy dinner and local Paso Robles nightlife.
Wednesday You’ll enjoy breakfast in town, then grab lunch and water and travel to a 5.5-mile summit hike in the Santa Lucia Range above Morro Bay. You’ll see a variety of terrain and plant communities along Mono Creek. After the hike, you’ll descend to the coast for a tasting at Harmony Cellars, then head uphill to York Mountain Winery to try their delectable Pinots. You’ll enjoy lunch at York Mountain, then hop in the van and return to your hotel, where you’ll unwind with dinner and a blind tasting of locally-produced Pinot Noir wines.
Thursday You’ll enjoy a leisurely breakfast, then an optional short walk around town. If you’ve booked a spa treatment for yourself, this might be a good time to revel in your well-earned luxury! At noon, you’ll raise a glass to each other and say your farewells.

“Our hike in the redwoods of the southern SF peninsula was the highlight of our trip. We were enthralled by the scenery and Russ kept us entertained with his knowledge of local history, flora and fauna. We’d do it again in a heartbeat. The en-route wine tasting and gourmet lunch was over the top!” — Bradley C., Penticton, British Columbia, Canada
