tour description

5-Day, 4-Night Hiking & Wine-Tasting Tour
On this premium hiking and wine-tasting adventure, you’ll enjoy some of the best exercise and best wines possible in a region known the world over. Wine lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will benefit immensely from all that Napa County has to offer in its rich variety of fine wines, dining, and hiking trails.

To the Wappo Indians who first inhabited the valley, the word “Napa” meant “land of plenty”. Spawning salmon filled the waterways, clouds of migrating waterfowl filled the skies, and the valley floor served as home to wildcats, elk, black bear, and grizzlies. Wild grapes also grew in abundance, but it took early settlers such as George Calvert Yount to recognize the valley’s potential for cultivating wine grapes. Establishing the first local homestead in what is now Yountville in 1836, Yount was the first to plant vineyards in the valley. Additionally, Charles Krug is credited with establishing Napa Valley’s first commercial winery in the early 1860’s; by the turn of the 20th century, there were more than 140 wineries operating here.

The Napa Valley is unique in that it has hundreds of different combinations of soil, topography, and weather, all of which optimally combine to form a very fertile agricultural region. Though Napa Valley is a worldwide household name, it is only one of a handful of Northern California appellations that produce fine wines. Two such appellations — Napa Valley and Howell Mountain, are within a short drive of each other, and only an hour’s drive from San Francisco.

On this premium hiking and wine-tasting tour, you’ll enjoy exclusive luxury accommodations, visits to boutique Napa Valley wineries, two comparative wine tastings, all meals, transportation & fees, and room tax.

The itinerary

Sunday
Meet your California Wine Hikes tour guide mid-afternoon at your hotel, where you’ll enjoy a buffet reception and a blind wine tasting of six premium Napa Valley Zinfandels.

Monday
We’ll enjoy breakfast at our hotel, then grab lunch, snacks, and water and take a drive to the west side of Napa Valley for an easy 4.4-mile hike and a nice view of the valley. We’ll visit a famous nearby winery, then travel to a family-owned winery in the Spring Mountain appellation, to enjoy a combination of Napa Valley atmospheres. Next, we’ll hop aboard the van and return to the hotel for a brief rest, followed by dinner with wine at a popular local restaurant.

Tuesday
After an early breakfast, we’ll head uphill at the north end of Napa Valley to the top of Mt. St. Helena for our longest hike of the tour, a 10-mile hike in Robert Louis Stevenson State Park — a hike that will thrill everyone with its fantastic long views. After our hike, we’ll visit one of our favorite Napa Valley wineries, then return to the hotel to tidy up. Later, we’ll enjoy dinner and, if we want, some local St. Helena nightlife.

Wednesday
We’ll enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then pack lunches and water and take a short local hike that most folks aren’t aware of. After our hike, we’ll visit two terrific wineries in the Chiles and Pope valleys, then return to our hotel, where we’ll unwind with dinner and a blind comparison of Napa Valley Cabernets.

Thursday
We’ll enjoy a leisurely breakfast, then an optional short walk. If the previous day’s hike has caught up with you, don’t worry — you can sleep in! At noon, we’ll raise a glass to each other and say our farewells.
