Beaujolais Nouveau: yesterday’s hip, today’s hype?

This year’s Beaujolais Nouveaux have arrived overnight in America and are on store shelves today.

I haven’t tried any yet. You see, I think there are so many better wines to spend my hard-earned money on. When the third Thursday in November comes around, the question that I find myself asking is:

Why should I buy Beaujolais Nouveau wine?

I could even ask,

Why did I buy six of them last year?

Some say that the fresh, fruity, and very young (this year’s crop) Beaujolais Nouveau wines are overrated and not worth the advance media hype. Other say they’re not worth the trouble of being first in line at your local wine merchant to snag a selection of them.

Would you agree? Do you disagree?

Regardless of how you feel about Beaujolais Nouveau, I’d like to hear your thoughts. Maybe you can even influence me to shop for and offer a review of what you feel is the best of the 2007 Beaujolais vintage. In the meantime, I list my observations about last year’s BNs:

Beaujolais Nouveau: yesterdays hip, todays hype?…

I think there are so many better wines to spend my hard-earned money on than Beaujolais Nouveau. Should I overlook my disdain and try a 2007 BN? Really, should I?…

Given my resolution to stick to “one wine per week” I wouldn’t want to waste my money or time on Beaujolais Nouveau as the wine for a particular week – there’s much better stuff out there than this fad. However I wouldn’t refuse a sample if offered..

Sure it’s a hyped-up wine, but I’m one of of those people who likes to buy into it. For me it’s just a fun little tradition at this time of the year. Over the weekend I’ll be tasting BNs from three or four different producers and writing about them next week, so we’ll see if I change my mind!

Or for that matter, Carol, my mind! Ah, tradition….

Having read a good deal of Dr. Vino and Dr. Debs, I’d have to say that BNs just do not measure up in the QPR Per Carbon Footprint Department. How many umpteen gallons of expensive jet fuel were burned into our warmy-swarmy atmosfear last night so that we could thrill to this swill?

So make mine a local zin – especially if it’s only one wine per week!

At least that’s what I’m thinking right now.

[...] If you’re searching for a review of Beaujolais Nouveau wines from the 2007 vintage and wound up here, I must admit that I haven’t yet reviewed the new vintage yet. But what I’d like to know is, Should I?
