Half Dome Day Hike, June 4-6

I have two spots open for a day hike up Half Dome that a friend of mine is ramrodding. The hike will be very strenuous and will include nearly a mile of elevation gain over 16 miles of hiking; we’re going to be attacking at dawn.
We have a campsite at Hodgdon Meadows Thursday night June 4th and we’re talking about dinner at the Ahwahnee; Friday night we have a yurt reserved in Groveland, where we’ll celebrate our adventure with a bottle of Dominus 2004.

Do I have any fellow tweeters who will do a day hike of Yosemite’s Half Dome with me? It’s going to be monumental fun. http://is.gd/vDxV

Howdy Chuck! I’m sorry you won’t make it, but I know you’ll be with us in spirit out there on that big rock. Thanks for checkin’ in!

Oh Russell, I have always wanted to drink Dominus in a yurt. Guess I will have to wait to check that one off the list. Have a wonderful hike!

Oh, Xandria, if I had only known!
Thank you for your kind well-wishes.

I’m happy to say that within hours, these two open spots were filled, and we have a full complement of six happy hikers for our June 5th “walk in The Park”. Yay!
Our team of six is going to meet in San Jose next Thursday, May 7th, to set expectations and discuss details. As the only veteran of the Half Dome hike among us – having summitted 3 times previously – I expect to drive home the “be self-sufficient” theme regarding having everything you need out there, most importantly a water filtration system. And to emphasize that point, I called for back-up.
As a result, Rick Deutsch, speaker, blogger and author of “Hike Half Dome”, has agreed to speak at our meeting and present a one-hour slide show! For that, I believe he’ll gladly part with an autographed book or two.

Happy to see you are winehiking again! When you dine at the Ahwahnee be sure to say hi to my son Andrew who will be preparing your meal. Just ask the server and he’ll pop out of the kitchen when he can.
I think the Dominus will pair very nicely with yurt.

Me, winehiking again? Heck, I never stopped! Well, except for a little winter hibernation.
Good of you to chime in here, Jefe, because I suspected we might meet your son at the Ahwahnee. Golly, I only hope our ramrod made the reservations! I better check….

Have a fantastic time. I am hoping to join you someday. I am down in Southern california and do a lot of hiking down here but would love to plan for some no cal hikes in the future.
I have a question- how do you work wine into these expeditions? Is there an after hike dinner/wine plan?

Hi Angela,
Though this Half Dome adventure is being put together by a friend and therefore not a California Wine Hikes event, I think it’s still worthwhile to celebrate outdoor achievements, both small and monumental! That’s why I’m bringing the Dominus to camp.
As you’ll see in most of my events, wine is an integral part of the experience whether it’s being tasted at a winery, poured at a post-hike picnic, served at dinner, or compared blind with other wines. What I don’t do is tote wine on the hiking trail, nor do I encourage the drinking of alcoholic beverages while engaging in hiking activity. The enjoyment of wine, I feel, is best paired with food and the time it takes to drink it in a relaxed and unhurried fashion. It’s a satisfying reward for our outdoor efforts as well as a fitting tribute to a day well spent.
