Kathy outdid what I was going to say! Calaveras may be the one wine country destination with more "other things" to do than any place else. Rafting, skiing, you name it. And the number of tasting rooms in Murphys recently increased to 11 (!)

Kathy's got a good point. Most peoples' default notion of visiting the "California wine country" has typically not gone beyond "visiting Napa Valley". But the California wine country offers so incredibly much more.

In fact, Napa Valley comprises only a miniscule fraction of the state's wine-touring destinations, especially when taking into account how much you would spend on wine, food, and lodging. And for hiking possibilities, Napa Valley is far down the list.

From Mendocino in the north to Santa Barbara in the south (and even Temecula further south) to the Pacific Coast and across to the Sierra foothills, and especially the greater San Francisco Bay Area, there is much California wine country to explore, including numerous world-class wines and a lot of exciting and diverse hiking trails.

So, when you think "California wine country," you have a lot of great options. Come on, fellow wine lover, and let me show you.

Exploring the region and sampling the wine produced in the area is the perfect combination for a relaxing trip. One of my favorite such trips is Calaveras County in the California's Sierra Nevadas. There are 10 wine tasting rooms all within walking distance in the historic town of Murphys and more wineries spread out in the surrounding area. It's fun to explore some of the caverns in the area and still have time to taste some of the wine as well. See: http://www.cheers2wine.com/caverns.html

I wholeheartedly agree with all 5 points, and particularly with E. One such destination is Jack London Park in Sonoma Valley. It is a beautiful, large area with hikes from easy to moderate. As well, London's old home has been turned into a museum.

We coupled our visit here with a tasting out at Iron Horse (reservations needed). Lovely wines, splendid champagne, and in good weather the tasting "room" is an open patio overlooking the vineyard.
