Tag, I’m It! Five Things You Don’t Know About Me

Like the legendary Kraken, a game of “getting to know you” is reaching its insidious tentacles throughout the blogosphere, and I have been summarily “tagged”. Quite naturally I am amused, and I am electing to play the game.
A big “Thanks a lot!” goes to Tom Chandler of Trout Underground, talented part-time copywriter and full-time flyfisherman (and fellow outdoor blogger) who has just tagged me, as well as divulged in his “five things” revelation that he once played the character of Scrooge onstage. Or maybe it was one of his brothers; only his music teacher didn’t know for sure. So they all got “A’s”.

Yes, I’m now “it”, and the Rules Of The Game dictate that I must reveal five things to you that you probably didn’t know about me, even if you’ve read my recent post, The Winehiker’s “Top 100 Things About Me”. Then I’ve got to tag five other bloggers.
And thus, the essence of the game, Five Things You Don’t Know About Me:
- I still own some pristine-quality baseball cards from the 1960’s, including Steve Carlton, Phil Niekro, Bob Gibson, Rod Carew, Carl Yastremzki, and the Topps 1964 National League RBI Leaders card that profiles Ken Boyer, Ron Santo, and Willie Mays. I suspect these old bubblegum cards still have value only to me.
- I used to ride my bicycle everywhere, and didn’t consider it important to obtain a driver’s license until I was 22. That kind of “low impact” awareness still resonates within me, and it is the foundation for many of the choices I make in my life.
- Next month I’ll be starting my 6th year of leading January-to-October biweekly group hikes; I intend to keep volunteering to host these events for as long as Nature allows. That way I can continue to “network” with both people and trees, as well as stay in shape for everything else I do. Like guiding wine country adventure tours, for instance.
- If there are enough pan drippings, I can make a mean gravy.
- I’ve never been flyfishing!
OK, so who’s next?
I think I’ll extend the reach of the Kraken’s arm to touch the following five bloggers across the wine and hiking spectra; I read their blogs regularly, sometimes daily.

I don’t publish personal stuff like this on The WildeBeat site for several reasons. So I’ll answer you here.
1. In the early ’90s, before there were blogs, I started a newsletter and attempted to start a club here in Silicon Valley called “Tour du Vin”, about combining bike touring and wine-tasting.
2. I once (in 1983) accidentally caused 15 seconds of loud audio test tone to go out live over the entire nationwide PBS network; nobody ever knew who to blame.
3. I had a job one summer designing electronics to measure electrical signals inside of rat’s hearts at the University of Iowa Research Hospital.
4. In high school, I took an award-winning football picture, but I still don’t know anything about, and have no interest in football; I just watched the ball and took pictures when the crowd got loudest. (All the other photographers were too busy cheering at the time to take pictures.)
5. I studied Japanese as my language in college.

Now let’s see: 2006 minus 1983 equals 23 years — enough time for any and all regulatory statutes to expire (at least enough time for the ringing in our ears to subside!), so I’m sure you’re safe from FCC prosecution by now. Hike on!
