The wineries of Kick Ranch

Dick Keenan of Kick Ranch Vineyards and Carica Wines, in a follow-up from October’s Wine Bloggers Conference, sends along the following note:

[Friday, October 24th] turned out to be a perfect day for tasting some of the best Syrah, Petite Sirah, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc from Kick Ranch, including our own Carica Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah (www.caricawines.com). I was delighted that you and other bloggers were able to begin your weekend by tasting wines from the incredibly talented group of winemakers that I have the pleasure of working with at Kick Ranch.

The pleasure was mine! I certainly found it unique that Friday to taste a couple dozen wines all sourced from the same vineyard. I intend to taste more!

And I recommend you do, too. Dick graciously shared a list of those talented Kick Ranch winemakers and their respective wineries; I’m hereby sharing that list with you.

A number of us who attended the Kick Ranch kick-off felt that the best wine being poured that day was the 2006 Hibou de Nuit Gewurztraminer. It’s been described as:

“Aromas of lychee, grapefruit, rose petals, and five spice powder greet the nose. The fruit and spice carry through on the palate with a touch of mineral to keep things interesting. This is dry stle Gewurztraminer that doesn’t hide rough edges behind a cloak of sugar. It pairs well with Asian influenced cuisines.”

Since I wrote this post, I learned from Glenn Alexander’s daughter, Chelsea, that Glenn and Russell Bevan are behind the Sanglier Cellars Syrah; Sanglier Cellars is partners with Tom Klassen, the winemaker for the Hibou de Nuit. Chelsea also tells me that the Hibou is now available for direct purchase online from Hiboucellars.com.

If multiple wine bloggers profess to love this wine, then you might want to get yourself some before it’s gone! Minimum 3-bottle order; $22 per 750ml bottle.
