A friend and I both tried this wine, and both of us made similar and immediate remarks about it -- dusty, dirty, mushroomy, woody, earthy. While tastebud physiology can surely account for some differences in palates -- regional or otherwise -- it's also possible that my particular bottle came from a different barrel or tank than the bottle from which the glowing shelf-talkers were spawned. Of course, the copywriters that wrote those descriptions were paid to write that stuff, and I (and you too, I'm sure) merely do it for the pure unadulterated love of wine -- or the pure occasional BLECCHH!! of it. Thank you for writing, Jessie Jane.

This is a great of example of either poorly written shelf-talkers or of the differing physiology of tastebuds! I haven't tried this one myself, so I can't speak to the descriptions you've posted, but I can certainly relate to that disappointment of a wine that doesn't quite live up to anything I've read about it. I wonder if you find yourself particularly sensitive to that earthiness that you so immediately recognized? It wouldn't surprise me if your tongue is just that good at picking it up.
